This Toadstool was literally one minute a tree and the next it was a Toadstool. Let me explain, I some times walk down the lane about 500yds from my home and out into the countryside were some Workers were cutting down and layering an overgrown Hawthorn hedge. They were actually burning the offcuts (sacrelidge), having asked permission I brought a couple of branches back to my workshop and a pile of turnings later, a Toadstool...... |

Wood Gavel turned from an offcut of an unknown African hardwood. |

This "Stool" is not a stool, the square hole in the top, could give you a clue but you have to be my sort of age ( 54 ) to have an idea !!!!!.
If you can imagine a square shaft fitted tightly in the hole about 3ft long and at the top a piece of dowel about12" long fitted thro at 90degrees to the square shaft to make a handle.
Any ideas... ???, give in... ??? OK it's a washing machine, let me explain.... when I was small, 4 or 5 years old, some friends of mum and dads gave it to me as a stool, it was made on a bodgers lathe, I think out of Ash ,but it was to be used with a "Dolly Tub", a zinc plated tub full of hot water and dirty washing, the Posher, the bottom of which looks like a stool, and is pictured here, was put in the tub and agitated by hand back and forth.... so my claim to fame is I can remember pre electric washing machines....
The second picture is of one I have made for my young granson, Jake.
It measures 9"diam. and 12" tall with six legs at an angle12 degees, sadly Jakes one is made of pine!!!.

These rattles are made from Beech and Steamed Pear, which is the larger of the two, they both have captive rings which is a bit of a novelty, but essential to provide the Rattle.
