The Poetry of Alan Sheppard...
SORROW OF NIPPON

The land of the rising sun lifted it angry red face,
The Shogun from his saddle kept the lands within his pace,
Soon his honour would face the test,
The barbarians in his lands had come to rest,
Remove their stain, there canker erase.

There had been several landings without grace,
The pale-faced foreigners had the wild winds braced,
So now his armies led by his officers best,
Would dispatch them from their hornets nest,
Spear and arrow, instead of silk and lace.

How could his lands be touched by beings so base,
How could he face his family and live with this disgrace,
Now was the time, before his people they did infest,
Not a proud time to beat ones breast,
This one action to preserve his noble race.
