The Poetry of Alan Sheppard...
FALL FROM GRACE

When the age of man was young,
Many Gods were virile and strong,
As long as man believed in them,
Then in the heavens they could belong.

The Sun God was the strongest at first,
With the Moon God as his wife,
But man grew bored with them,
And Christianity came to life.

But times move on and mans needs change,
The leading God now in the heavens in money,
Material possessions are his gift,
Whether the moon shines or its sunny.

Man is prepared to fight for his new high God,
Prepared to kill and cheat each other,
carrying a likeness in the form of a cash point card,
Trading one coin or bank note for another.

The Money God is a jealous God,
And allows his followers to praise him only,
The strangest thing is though,
The pursuit of this God leaves you lonely.

The more riches you acquire,
The more money you stock pile,
The more alone you become,
And to you the world more hostile.

The last god you then meet is death,
And as he leads you away to your afterlife,
Your money stays behind, you enter naked,
Wondering if it was worth so much strife
