The Poetry of Alan Sheppard...
THE CLOWN

Once again he takes his curtain call,
Once again the kids have had a ball,
Now the curtain drops as he takes his leave,
Wiping the make up off on his sleeve.

back to the areas the public don't see,
Where his smile slips free,
He lights a cigarette and sits at his chair,
His act completed with its usual flair.

He has loved this job,
He has loathed this job,
It pays his way,
The only reason for him to stay.

Now with out make up he is once again sane,
From clown like antics he can refrain,
He puts his head in his hands and cries,
Living another day laughing and lies.

He lost his enthusiasm years past,
Injecting drugs takes him away fast,
The kids never know he is whacked out,
They enjoy every performance he has no doubt.

Charlie the Clown, how apt,
The only way he can adapt,
Lost in the world without hope,
Coping only on smack and dope.

Loving you more as my hair turns gray.
