The Poetry of David W Hoffman...
Journey's End

Yesterday I spent with my family,
Playing ball with my son in our lush green backyard.
My eye caught my wife and daughter
Whispering secrets by the door.

As evening arose,
Treasure my wife I did by a faint red glow.
Dreaming children tucked away,
Breathing soundly as the night quietly aged.

New York morning, like every morning
Watched me rise from my warm bed.
She rolled deeper onto my side,
Claiming the free cooling territory.

A sip of my morning brew,
Out the door, into my not so new car.
The everyday sound of an engine,
That doesn't want to run.

I see the children playing at the bus stop.
The main highway greets me,
Soon I'll be there.
Like every morning it doesn't take long.

Shining bright in the morning sun.
Two giant towers made by man.
Giant shadows upon the cityscape,
Always chasing each other.

Like every morning I pass by security.
My car sputters and stops
In yet another oil stained spot.
Wavering stars guide us all.

At the elevator, sleepy eyed morning folk.
Sliding doors open and into a box we all go.
Someone forgot some hygiene.
Next stop; lobby in the sky.

I open my, ever creaking, office door.
Only to find more work,
Papers here and papers there.
At least I get to sit by the window.

Without warning a shudder and a scream.
It seems an airplane missed the sky,
Hitting our building while in flight.
Outside my window I can see,
Black sky now speckled with orange rain.

I couldn't tell if the floor trembled from fright
Or from our pounding feet seeking a way out.
A thousand reapers I did see,
One of which came after me.
