Orlando Chero
Peruvian Portrait Artist

I was born on September 18th 1962 in Lambayeque city which is located in the north of Peru.
My parents are Francisco Chero Incio and Emperatriz Rojas de Chero. I have 8 brothers and sisters of which I am the fourth one.

When I was a kid, I realized that I had a very deep interest in painting and I was 7years old when my parents bought me a box of coloured pencils. It was with those pencils that I started painting. I used to get the best qualifications at school, so I felt that art as part of my life.

In the beginning I didn’t know how to prepare a material or canvas but when I was 15 I was so interested in art that I started buying art books and it was through them I learned many new things.

One day, after some time of saving my pocket money, I decided to buy some oil paints and other things to use on my first work. I came back home and I started it. I was really excited when I started my first painting.

At the end of 1979 I was already painting some landscapes to sell. In 1982 I participated in a competition which was sponsored by “La Industria” newspaper. I was very excited to be in that event and the title of my painting was “Pasiones Negras de una Reyna” ( Dark Passions of a Queen ). In that competition I was awarded 3rd place.

In October the same year, there was another competition sponsored by the National Cultural Institution, Lambayeque office in which I was awarded 2nd place. My painting was title “La Limosnera” ( The Purse ). In 1984 I got a scholarship to study at “Escuela de Bellas Artes – Ignacio Merino” at Piura city. After a year I realize my attraction for “Corriente del Cubismo” so it was then that I started doing paints like “Mujer Embarazada” ( Pregnant woman ), “Mendigando” ( Begging ), “El Frutero” ( The Fruits Seller ), etc.

In 1985, together with a group of friends we founded “Centro Cultural Artistico de Lambayeque” ( Artistic Cultural Centre of Lambayeque )

In 1986 I was awarded 1st place in a craftsmanship event sponsored by the Tourism and Industry Ministry. In 1987 I was awarded by the Tourism and Industry Ministry the gold ear and in the same year I got an invitation from the National Cultural Institution from Cuzco city to participate on the first International Biennial.

It was in this year that I got married and nowadays I have 2 kids, a son called Kurt who is 16 years old and is virtuoso with the violin and a little daughter Verocka who is just 5 years old but I can already see her inclination for painting.

Presently I work in my studio in Lambayeque city where I paint “Costumbristas y Cubistas” as well as portraits in oil which I export to different countries.
