About the Artist.... Gaelene Clarke

Welcome to my Web Page.......

My name is Gaelene Clarke and I am currently living in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where I attended an Etching Course at the Dubai International Art Centre. I enjoy this method of printmaking as it gives me the ability to be able to express the boldness of ethnic design through these relief etchings.

Currently my work is reflective of my African roots, as well as of my time spent living in Hong Kong ( around seven years ). I also like to be involved with the framing process of these prints as I like experimenting with different framing ideas.

I have taken part in exhibitions in Dubai and recently won a 'Merit Award' at the Dubai International Art Centre’s 48th Members Exhibition.

My etchings, which are limited to editions of basically a 100 prints, are created using the “relief” method which results in a more “embossed looking” print. The process involves painting liquid grounds onto a zinc plate, then using an etching needle to etch the design when the grounds are dry. The plate is then submerged into an acid bath – the acid “eats” down into the exposed metal and resists the grounds. The grounds are cleaned off once the design has been etched to the required depth. Ink is applied and then placed on the press bed with the medium to be printed on. I like to use a variety of mediums such as handmade paper, hessian, silk and silk paper, etc.

Kindly email me ( Press here ) for any further information on these prints.
