About the ARTIST....
Jessica Perry....
My work is about my life and helps me communicate feelings that I cannot articulate in words. It is a physical model for the stages, emotions, and dilemmas in my life, documenting the progress and resistance I experience.

My work reveals an autobiography through the language of the body and material. I use the human body, or a representation of myself, to give form to psychological states, such as, fears, anxiety and vices. The figure is placed in juxtaposition with objects and their environment. The juxtaposition represents the limits of a life lived in conflict with its desires and it's role in society. Along with the idea of conflict, I focus on protection, evolution, development, healing and growth and how it relates to different stages of life. These stages are depicted in social and spiritual situations.
Many of my ideas are developed from personal experience, the relationship between body and mind and post-structuralist theoretical discourse. In addition, the concepts and materials that artists Carolee Schneemann, Kiki Smith and Cindy Sherman address and utilize influence my artwork.
I use a variety of media to translate these concepts, including painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture. In addition, I work with many non-traditional materials, such as salt, wool, fiber, glass, dried foods and rust which are used in conjunction with traditional art making methods, such as, sculpture, painting and drawing. Medium and material are metaphors that convey my concepts. Although much of my work is constructed in varying techniques, I maintain continuity with pattern, repetition, and translucency of layers. These elements help me convey the complexity of emotion and communication while bridging the variety of material.
